Every year, hundreds of thousands of women in the global South die during pregnancy or childbirth. Many of these deaths are preventable. Comprehensive interventions are required to reduce the number of maternal deaths and to improve the health of children under five. In support of MDG #4 and MDG #5, WUSC is committed to building the capacity of local organizations and individuals (including men) to support service delivery and the quality of care.
WUSC promotes the health of mothers and children by:
- training health care workers (mid-wives, doctors, nurses, community health workers) to provide quality health services for mothers in Burkina Faso;
- improving family nutrition, especially for mothers and children under five in Burkina Faso;
- preventing the transmission of HIV from mothers to children in Botswana, Malawi and Burkina Faso.
