An active, organized and engaged civil society fosters healthy and vibrant communities and good governance. Civil society includes a diversity of voices such as non-governmental organizations, community groups, women's organizations, professional associations, trade unions, social movements, coalitions, and advocacy groups. These play a variety of roles, including providing social services, strengthening government accountability, promoting disease awareness, and working against violence and abuse.
WUSC works with civil society groups to strengthen their abilities to promote participation and engage citizens to influence change in their communities. WUSC works to strengthen civil society by:
- improving industrial relations, working conditions, access to citizenship documentation, and strengthening women’s community groups in Sri Lanka;
- strengthening women’s voice and influence through civil society organizations in Sri Lanka;
- enhancing civil societies’ ability to respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Malawi and Botswana.
