Student Refugee Program Resources

As a WUSC sponsoring Local Committee, you play a vital role in making the Student Refugee Program a success.  Local Committees are responsible for providing financial, academic and social support for a minimum of 12 months from the time the student arrives in Canada.

A variety of partners are also involved in the sponsorship process, from WUSC's overseas partners to the Government of Canada, International Organization for Migration (IOM), government from asylum countries and local Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) offices.

Building Bridges

Building Bridges

With support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, WUSC is pleased to present "Building Bridges: Best Practices in Creating Effective Partnerships between Student Volunteers and their Communities to Support Newcomers in Small Communities." This manual is designed to help refugee-sponsoring student-led campus groups based in small and/or rural communities in facilitating the process of building local partnerships in order to strengthen the support they provide to newcomers. Its content, a mixture of lessons learned and case studies, emerged through a study conducted in the Ontario-based communities of Alfred, North Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay in 2008-09. Click here to read:  Best Practices (PDF) | Powerpoint Summary
