Dynamic Development – 2015/2016 Annual Report

Over the years, WUSC has formed a network of individuals passionate about our mission, within Canada and internationally. These skilled development experts and enthusiasts span generations and geographies. And they provide the foundation for our work in development.

In 2015/2016, with the support of our network, we marked the beginning of several new initiatives. We also celebrated significant renewals of our ongoing work, both of which reflect the continued growth of WUSC programming around the world. Of particular note:

  • We doubled the number of refugee youth supported by our Student Refugee Program (SRP) with an incredible 160 students sponsored last year. This would not have been possible without the partnership of 86 universities, colleges, and CEGEPs from across the country and over 800 student Local Committee members.
  • Globally, we began a new phase of our international volunteer cooperation program, Uniterra. This new phase mobilized over 300 volunteers and supported almost 200 local partners in 14 countries across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In Canada, our Uniterra volunteers’ public engagement efforts helped raise awareness of Canada’s contributions to global development among almost 3 million Canadians.

This year was not only a story about growth and positive change. With every step forward, we faced opposing forces that challenged our vision and mission. While it would be easy to become discouraged at times such as these, the path ahead is unmistakable. Now more than ever, we must be collaborative and creative in our approach to development.
