WUSC in Malawi
Active in Malawi since 1981, WUSC's programs are focused in the following sectors: - education and health - including basic education, HIV and AIDS and refugee issues
- sustainable livelihoods - including agriculture and rural development.
We work primarily in central and southern Malawi where the effects of HIV and AIDS and environmental degradation are most pronounced. Current Programs Grant Support to the Education Sector: WUSC is strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Education to provide and manage the supply of quality, gender-sensitive education materials for primary school students and teachers. Uniterra: Our volunteer cooperation program places Canadian and southern volunteers with local partner organizations working in HIV/AIDS as well as agriculture/rural development. Uniterra is a joint initiative of WUSC and the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI). Student Refugee Program : Each year, the SRP enables about 50 refugees from conflict zones in a developing country to enter Canada as permanent residents in order to continue their post-secondary education. Malawi is one of three countries of asylum where candidates are selected. Equity in Education Project: Increases school enrolment levels among girls, orphans and other vulnerable children by developing systems that promote equity in education. Canada Fund for Local Initiatives: Provides support to strengthen the capacity of local development organizations. WUSC administers the fund on behalf of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
